If you've ever wondered why your kettle, shower screen and taps seem to get crusty white deposits no matter how often you clean them, you're not imagining it, and you're not doing anything wrong. It's the water.
Why the Fylde Coast specifically?
Lancashire sits in a moderately hard water area, and across Blackpool, Thornton-Cleveleys, Poulton and the wider Fylde, the water supply carries a noticeably higher mineral content than you'd find in, say, parts of Scotland or the South West. That mineral content, mostly calcium and magnesium, is what limescale actually is. Every time water evaporates on a surface, a thin layer of mineral gets left behind. Do that every single day in a shower or kettle, and it builds fast.
Where it shows up worst
- Kettles and coffee machines — anything that heats water repeatedly accelerates the build-up dramatically
- Shower screens and showerheads — constant water contact plus warmth is the perfect combination
- Taps and tap bases — especially anywhere water sits and dries rather than being wiped immediately
- Toilet bowls — the waterline ring that won't budge with ordinary cleaner is almost always limescale, not staining
What actually works (and what doesn't)
Generic all-purpose sprays mostly don't touch limescale because it needs something acidic to dissolve the minerals, not something that just lifts dirt. Here's what genuinely works:
- White vinegar is the cheapest effective option. Soak a cloth, wrap it round taps and showerheads, leave for 30 minutes, wipe away
- A dedicated limescale remover works faster on heavy build-up, but always check it's safe for the surface first, particularly on chrome and brushed finishes
- Regular wiping after use is the unglamorous truth: drying surfaces immediately after water contact stops the deposit forming in the first place
The bit most people get wrong
Scrubbing harder doesn't help with limescale the way it does with grease or grime. Limescale needs to be chemically dissolved, not physically scraped off, and aggressive scrubbing on chrome or glass can actually scratch the surface and make future build-up stick even faster.
We deal with this in every Fylde Coast home, every week
Our Klea Plus and Full Edit cleans include a proper limescale treatment on taps, showerheads and glass, so you never have to think about it.
